What do I need to do?

Talk with your school Gateway Coordinator - they will help you choose a career pathway and the unit standards that you should work towards. They will also find the job placement for you.

Your coordinator will give you the Skills4Works learning material (this is all the theory you need to know) and assessment material (these all involve some written questions and a workplace practical assessment.).

It is important that you keep up with your school subjects while you are on the Gateway programme as these are teaching you important skills too.

Take your time reading the learning material and doing the practice exercises - you want to be well prepared for going into the workplace.

Read the workplace practical assessment and talk with your workplace supervisor/manager/team leader to make sure you are able to do all the tasks that you have to complete.

Completing the assessment

You will find the answers to the written questions by reading the learning material and by talking with people in your workplace.

When you feel confident carrying out the tasks in the workplace practical assessment, ask your supervisor/manager/team leader to watch you and to fill in the form to say that you can do everything.

Make sure you sign the Candidate's Declaration, then give your completed assessment back to your coordinator.
